Why dont electricity companies use our roof (solar) to generate electrcity to contribute to the national grid?

I live in New Zealand, where production of nuclear electricity is not an option and where solutions must be found which are sustainable. Most of our electricity is generated by hydro-electric dams, but as we get closer to need electricity (which seems to minimize the use is in the too-hard basket) we are asked to consider "solutions", as Marsden B - a proposed coal-fired power plant. What I want to know is why power companies cannot make a deal with us to install solar panels on our roofs that can contribute to the national grid every day? Obviously electricity is difficult to store, but there must be a more sustainable and economically friendly way to provide electricity to homes without sacrificing the planet. … Read entire article »
