Why dont electricity companies use our roof (solar) to generate electrcity to contribute to the national grid?
I live in New Zealand, where production of nuclear electricity is not an option and where solutions must be found which are sustainable. Most of our electricity is generated by hydro-electric dams, but as we get closer to need electricity (which seems to minimize the use is in the too-hard basket) we are asked to consider "solutions", as Marsden B - a proposed coal-fired power plant. What I want to know is why power companies cannot make a deal with us to install solar panels on our roofs that can contribute to the national grid every day? Have you heard the hype, the 'Flex Fuel Vehicles', the 'E85 Green Fuel', the 'ethanol blended gas'. Oil companies are touting their embrace of Ethanol as them going green, but how green ethanol really is? What is fuel ethanol? Ethanol is a grain alcohol. It 'also commonly known as ethanol or hydroxyethane. Ethanol fuel in cars is denatured (you can not get drunk off of it) and is primarily made from corn. It is here that one of the biggest problems come from. Growing corn for ethanol is not the most efficient use of energy or resources. It costs more to grow and harvest corn than many other fuels.
